Mixtape: My Life Through Your Eyes juxtaposes countless appropriated visuals taken from the extensive media Hermann consumes with the soundtrack of his life. The 40 minute video is a journey organized into ten chapters, each a different subject the artist imagines might pass through his mind at such a stunning moment. Employing the format of a mixtape, one of the most democratic and ubiquitous forms of self-expression which uses appropriated content, disparate material is pulled together to create a thoughtful yet unnerving arrangement of media bombardment. The work is self-produced and independently released free of charge just as mixtapes were originally intended. As critical as it is celebratory of the overwhelming role digital media plays in our lives, the work is intended to be viewed on the same devices which served as its inspiration – anything with an internet connection.
